Fancy a quick trip to Northern Italy? Well in this class Ben explores the work of Loris Malaguzzi and the world famous and inspirational Reggio Emilia approach to Early Years education. Born out of the grip of war, poverty and extremism rose an approach to early years education with so much beauty and immense individual creativity. "The Reggio Emilia Approach® is an educational philosophy based on the image of a child with strong potentialities for development and a subject with rights, who learns through the hundred languages belonging to all human beings, and grows in relations with others." In this class Ben takes you on an incredible journey exploring the context that surrounded the creation of Reggio Emilia, the fundamental principles of the approach that make it so unique, how you can build a Reggio Emilia curriculum, the important role of the adult and the special role your environment plays!
1. A Quick History Lesson
05:44Let's jump back in time and visit Northern Italy during the early 1940's, which had be left devastated in the wake of the destruction caused by World War II. In order to truly understand and appreciate the unique magic at the very heart of the Reggio Emilia Approach you need to understand the where, and why, behind the context it was born. In this lesson Ben takes you on this journey of discovery as we revisit the creation of the Reggio Emilia Approach.
2. An Image Of A Child
08:04In this lesson Ben explores the idea behind our 'image of a child' and what we think children can and can't do. Our constructed perspective of children's capabilities, method of learning and overall competence greatly impacts our methodology towards teaching, and ultimately the type and quality of education children receive. Everything we do stems from our 'image of a child' which is why this is a natural topic to begin our Reggio Emilia journey.
3. The Hundred Languages Of Children
14:32Lesson 3 presents the core principle of the Reggio Emilia Approach as Ben delves into the idea of children having '100 languages' and the ability to express themselves in an endless number of ways. The purpose of this class is to explore the fundamental cornerstones of the approach, as well as highlighting your role as a facilitator for their curiosity and exploration.
4. The Environment As The 3rd Teacher
09:09The environment is a fundamental aspect of the Reggio Emilia Approach and was famously labeled as the 3rd Teacher by Loris Malaguzzi. Within this lesson you'll explore why our environments are so important for children, and how we can ensure that we're providing children with the environments and resources they require to freely explore and express themselves through their 100 languages.

We're not the biggest chain in the world with just under 60 members of staff, but The Early Years Network has been amazing for getting everyone engaged and excited to learn. If I had of asked our teams to go away over the weekend and do some research on a early years topic they'd have looked at me crazy, but since providing them with The Early Years Network I don't even need to ask. The majority of our team have become so engaged with their own learning and the provision our setting is providing I wish we'd have found this platform sooner!
