Stories are an Early Years Teacher’s special power, as through stories we’re able to unlock magical areas of children's brains through their imaginations and fantasy where incredible learning takes place. As a fantastic actress herself Olivia is well placed to guide you through this class about all things storytelling in the early years! Throughout the different lessons in this class you'll explore how you can most effectively incorporate stories into your curriculum and routines, some tips and tricks how best to deliver stories and ways in which you can inspire children's learning through stories. So lets all promise to stop using stories just as a time filler sandwiched into the day, and find out how you can transform it into one of your superpowers!

Skills you'll learn

Lesson Content

1. Let's Go Back To Basics

12:29

How does your storytime benefit your children? Are you just using stories as a filler during the day to allow the rest of your team to do some clearing up? If so this lesson is a must for you and your teams, as in lesson one Olivia explores how we can best utilise stories and the educational, social and cognitive benefits effective storytelling can bring your children.

2. Unlocking Imaginations Through Your Environment

07:43

To continue our storytelling journey Olivia talks about the importance of your environment when it comes to storytelling and accessing books/words. In this lesson Olivia offers so many unique ways we can shape our environments to draw out children's excitement for books and storytelling!

3. How To Make Your Stories More Exciting

04:48

Are your stories boring, unimaginative and quite frankly dull? If so, then I'd strongly recommend you tune into this lesson all about the different ways you can make your stories more fun and engaging!

4. Storytelling In The Baby Room

05:10

Human beings best learn language through engaging with spoken word in a social environment, so what better way to help babies learn words and sounds than through storytelling? Sometimes the art of storytelling is lost once you leave the pre-school and two's rooms but as Olivia demonstrates that really shouldn't be the case!

5. Super Storytelling Strategies

05:13

Let's leave the baby room and join Olivia in finding out how we can drive children's learning and the quality of our stories in older children rooms. Storytimes can so easily be rich with learning and holistic development, so why not find out some of the ways Olivia stimulates children's engagement, curiosity and learning through stories!

6. Incorporating Role Play

08:14

Everyone loves some drama! Well children are no different, they love to use their imaginations, creativity and fantasies to explore new worlds. So in this lesson, Olivia spills the beans on how you can help children along the way and bring your stories to life!

7. Utilising Helicopter Stories

12:18

Within this lesson you'll explore just how amazing helicopter stories are at getting children involved, unlocking our imaginations and drawing out so many different areas of learning. As Olivia explains, they're an incredible tool for developing children both educationally, cognitively, emotionally and socially. Why not give them a try at your setting?

8. The Achievements Of Vivian Gussin Paley

04:09

Vivian Gussin Paley was an American pre-school and kindergarten teacher and early childhood education researcher who created a number of techniques and strategies for storytelling. In this lesson Olivia provides you with a brief synopsis of the life and career of Vivian Gussin Paley, as well as some of the key lessons learnt from her work.

Meet your teacher

What I enjoy the most about the early years, is allowing children to thrive in a caring, compassionate and engaging environment. Previously, I have trained and come from a performing arts and entertainment background, which of course comes together nicely when working with these impressionable and curious children. I pride myself in making learning fun and enabling, whilst encouraging children to celebrate their own unique individualities.

'Learning for a brand new mummy and professional in early years.'

I've recently become a mummy for the first time and just recently gone back to work as a room leader. I was really nervous about feeling left behind and out of the loop, but finding The Early Years Network has given me so many ideas to share with my team and confidence. The bitesize lessons are so easy to dip in and out of, I find myself watching them at the most random moments! I've so far encouraged all my team to sign up and would recommend anyone with young children or works in the industry to get it!
