The characteristics of effective learning sound more complicated than they actually are, in fact they're really quite straightforward and an invaluable tool to help support your children! If you are slightly unsure about what they are, or how you can implement them into your practice, then why not join Emily in this class as she explores the in's and out's of all things characteristics of learning. Within this class you'll cover each of the characteristics individually, how you can observe them through your observations and how you can further children's learning based upon your understanding of their characteristics. Having an in-depth understanding of the different characteristics can provide practitioners with a powerful tool in understanding the reasoning behind their children's actions, and help them to facilitate play more effectively for the unique child.
1. What Are The Characteristics Of Effective Learning?
02:00First up Emily delves into the definition of 'the characteristics of effective learning' and provides an overall view of the three different characteristics, as well as, the what and why behind them. Understanding what you are looking for within each characteristic and the usual traits children will display, is vital to be able to highlight them within children and then utilise them to extend and enrich play.
2. Playing & Exploring
04:53The first of the three individual characteristic's Emily explores is 'playing and exploring'. Within this lesson you'll discover concepts such as 'finding out & exploring', 'playing with what they know' and 'being willing to have a go', in order to explain what the child might be showing, what we can do and how our environments can support this style of learning.
3. Active Learning
04:00The second of the three individual characteristic's Emily explores is 'active learning'. Within this lesson you'll discover concepts such as 'being involved and concentrating', 'keep trying' and 'enjoying achieving what they set out to do', in order to explain what the child might be showing, what we can do and how our environments can support this style of learning.
4. Creative & Critical Thinking
04:42The final of the three individual characteristic's Emily explores is 'creative and critical thinking'. Within this lesson you'll discover concepts such as 'having their own ideas', 'making links' and 'working with ideas', in order to explain what the child might be showing, what we can do and how our environments can support this style of learning.
5. Utilising Our Observations
03:02This lesson is all about observations and how we can effectively link our observations to characteristics of effective learning to better understand a child's motives, ideas and how we might extend and help their play moving forward.
6. Putting Them Into Practice
03:07In this final lesson Emily puts everything you've learnt so far into practice, and investigates how we can use the different characteristics in our day to day practice, as well as the amazing benefits of doing so!
Having worked in early years since the age of 16 early childhood learning means everything to me, which is why I'm so passionate about ensuring a platform dedicated to our communities learning exists. I've experienced first hand the lack of genuine and affordable learning opportunities that exist within early years and trying to provide my teams with high quality and flexible training on a non-existent budget is an impossible task. Its our mission to change this.
After losing my love of Early Years and taking a 10 year break from the sector, I have found The Early Years network!!. It has totally opened my eyes to how much the industry has evolved and has sparked my passion to retrain. Their videos have reminded me why I loved early years so much, and I can't wait to be back in practice again.
